Bank of Chattanooga Error Notes

Overview
The notes in this section are printing errors. If notes have incorrect devices in the plate, they are listed as varieties not as errors. For example G-53 $1 Type of note printed over unused Bank of East Tennessee notes has one of the pyramids at the top right inverted. Since this difference was in the plate it is treated as a variety.

Face printing on back
Three printing errors notes are shown with the $0.50 printing on the back. One or more of these errors is probably what Paul Garland identified G-45 as "like G-44 except printed on reverese of other Bank of Chattanooga notes". The first type is a normal G-44 $0.50 has a back that has the normal black G-44 printing. The second type is a G-44.1 $0.50 "string ray" front has a back that has the "string ray" black back G-44.1 printing that is misaligned. The third type is an offset error on the back of the note that shows a mirror image of the normal black note printing on the back.

Offset Error on back
If a sheet of banknote paper is not feed into the press the image will be printed on the roller opposite the printing plate since there is no paper between the plate and the roller. When the next sheet of banknote paper is fed through the image will be printed on the face from the printing plate and the back will pick up the ink that was on the roller. The back will be the mirror image of the normal printing creating as an offset error. A $0.50 G-46 offset error is shown.

Overprint error
Frequently, notes printed in black and white are overprinted with a colored denomination to foil counterfeiters. The $3 G-84 shows the part of the red two dollar denomination near the top and the 3 near the bottom. This indicates the $1, 2 and 3 Bank of Chattanooga notes printed over the Bank of East TN notes were printed on one sheet.

The over printed Two Dollar Note, G-71, below shows the red 3 near the bottom of the note and a red smudge at the top from the misplaced 2. It also have a normal placed 2 indicating the printer saw the problem and ran the note though the press again to print the 2 in the proper location. Note also the top of the T in TWO DOLLARS at the right edge is gone indicating the plate was damaged.

The G-51 blue "ONE" overprint is on the note twice because the sheet did not feed as far as as it should so the overprint for the next note was printed on the same note. We can conclude this series of notes was printed with the same denomination on the same sheet unlike the notes printed over the bank of East Tennessee notes.

The $2 G-65 overprint was was probably printed upside down and then reprinted correctly.
